The Social Movement

I’m working about 40 hours in the library this week, which wouldn’t be the problem if it weren’t so repetitive. I’m working on the barcode project. I think I mentioned earlier that 10,000 books made it into the stacks unbarcoded, so I track them down and barcode them. I am down to 3,000. Today I hit the stacks in the far back corner of the basement, where no one ever goes because the books are covered in dust. I mentioned this to Rach and she asked what the topic was (our library is still on the Dewey Decimal system.) Education. All of our teaching and education books never get checked out. Yes, we are the future of America. I made a Haitian friend today. He is part of the Social movement and gave me a long lecture about education being the backbone of society. I decided not to tell him about the library.

He uses the words so and ok like they are place holders. He will finish a sentence then say “so,” and so I wait for him to say something else but really he says it to indicate he is done speaking. In the end I gave him Kara’s info and told him she was 21 and would love to speak french with him.

I finally started driving around Memphis today. I’m starting to think I could like it here. I saw guy at church tonight. He’d hadn’t slept in a couple days so he was a little quiet and he had a project to finish before the lab closed at 11, but when Liz told them where we were eating dinner after church he and his buddies showed up and ate with us anyway. It was alot of fun. Saturday is the grizzlies game and he’ll be there too. Liz told me to wear something cute but cute and basketball don’t make a lot of sense to me. I’d feel ridiculous dressing up for a basketball game. Unless it was black so that I could mourn the Grizzlies loss ahead of time.

  1. the english word i miss most is “so.” it just doesn’t exist in the same way in spanish and i can’t seem to fall in love with “bueno.” so i find myself saying things like, “sí, me gustó mucho la pelicula. so, ¿que quieres para la cena?” which doesn’t seem to confuse people as much as i expected. so.

  2. Don’t cry for me Grizzilina… It’s been years since we’ve won many games…

    I think black would’ve been perfect…so….
